Grant Protection&Legal Assistance to Non-Violent Offenders Facing Life-Threatening Issues

Grant Protection&Legal Assistance to Non-Violent Offenders Facing Life-Threatening Issues
The Issue
As a resident of Milwaukee County, I have personally experienced the vulnerabilities and constant anxiety that our justice system can impose. The system, which is supposed to serve and protect us, often falls short due to rigid procedures that officials are bound by. These procedures leave no room for understanding or compassion in situations that aren't as black and white as they seem.
I am not alone in this experience. There are countless individuals who, like me, have non-violent arrest warrants but are also facing life-threatening issues. These individuals should be able to come forward without fear of immediate arrest or persecution. They should be allowed access to the necessary documents and information needed for their protection against any further threats from others.
In 2019 alone, Milwaukee County had over 37,000 outstanding warrants (source: Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office). It is unknown how many of these cases involve non-violent offenders with serious health conditions or threats against their lives; however even one case is too many.
Our justice system needs reform so it can truly serve all its citizens - especially those most vulnerable among us who need protection rather than punishment. We deserve better representation and protections put in place for our communities' wellbeing.
It's time we call on our local government officials in Milwaukee County to address this issue urgently by creating policies that grant protection and legal assistance to non-violent offenders facing life-threatening issues.
Please sign this petition if you believe in a more compassionate justice system where everyone gets the help they need when they need it most.
