Reopening of Private Owned Gyms in Illinois in Phase 3

Reopening of Private Owned Gyms in Illinois in Phase 3

The Issue

ALLOW US TO HELP OUR COMMUNITIES BECOME HEALTHIER.

This petition is asking Illinois Governor JB Pritzker permission to reopen Micro Gyms and Pilates and Yoga Studios at the start of Phase 3 so that we can help our community.

Research has shown time and time again that exercise strengthens our immune system, it lowers the effects of depression, it protects us from many of the same things that lead to more serious complications from COVID-19, and most importantly of all right now, it gives our community an outlet to cope with the stresses we're all battling.

By allowing these private facilities to open up their doors, and SAFELY operate, the communities health will only improve... which, in the end, extends the goal of the original government precautions taken. Fitness needs to be a part of the long term solution, and private gyms and professionals can safely take the necessary steps to bridge that solution.

We believe that as smaller, independent facilities, we can take the appropriate measures to ensure the safety of our employees and customers, follow strict social distancing recommendations, and fall in line with local, state, and federal recommendations.

Currently, private fitness facilities are in the same classifications as big box commercial gyms. But private facilities are vastly different than big box gyms, and need to be reclassified as such. Private gyms are appointment-based-services with member only access. These facilities are not open to the public. Private gym facilities can easily and logistically abide by social distancing practices to ensure the safety and well-being of all their members during this time.

Again, this can be exhibited through the use of separating equipment (no sharing), exceeding the required minimum of 6 feet, cleaning and disinfecting all equipment immediately after use, and limiting the number of people (<10) in the facility at one time to meet requirements.

With appointment-based services being allowed to resume operations with Phase 3, there is no reason that private fitness facilities should be excluded from this opening date. Allow us to open & operate under any such guidelines that other appointment-based services are required under Phase 3.
