Governor Newsom: Ensure immigrant parents can safely attend their children’s graduation
The Issue
In Los Angeles - like in many cities in CA - some parents are making a tough decision: skipping their own children’s graduation ceremonies out of fear that showing up could put them at risk of immigration enforcement.
No parent should have to choose between celebrating their child’s success and protecting their own safety.
As reported by CBS News, families across LAUSD—home to one of the largest immigrant populations in the country—are worried that ICE activity or local enforcement near school campuses could turn a joyful event into a moment of fear. Some parents are undocumented. Others live in mixed-status households. All they want is to be there for their child’s proudest day.
That’s why we’re calling on Governor Gavin Newsom to issue clear public guidance and take action to ensure that graduation events across California are protected, safe spaces for immigrant families.
We urge the Governor to take concrete measures to ensure that school events—including graduations—are safe locations, where immigration enforcement will not occur.
Direct school districts and law enforcement agencies across California to coordinate and share safety assurances with immigrant families
Support local districts like LAUSD in protecting the rights and dignity of all families, regardless of immigration status.
These families have supported their children through everything—remote learning, pandemic loss, economic hardship. They deserve to be there when their kids walk across the stage.
Please sign if you believe every parent in California should feel safe attending their child’s graduation.
