Remove Maria Pereira From Bridgeport City Council

The Issue

Maria Pereira, Bridgeport City Council Member, is supposed to be a public worker of the city of Bridgeport. However, she has shown no respect to citizens of her city and has slandered board members of color. She posted rude remarks on her Facebook page calling a specific board of Education member “ghetto”, “moronic”, and “a nobody”. This is just one example of the racial hate she spread on her page. When citizens of her community expressed their disappointment on her PUBLIC post, she preceded to tell them not to comment and blocked anyone who opposed her opinion. According to the ACLU, as of 2019, the court made it illegal to block constituents on social media pages. This action restricts citizens from using their first amendment right to speak against their government. Given that this is not the first time Pereira has said comments rooted in racism or inappropriate dialogue, she must be held accountable. This is in addition to her pattern of creating disturbances and threatening people which are charges that have been brought against her in a very short amount of time while serving the city of Bridgeport. Public officials, especially city council members need to be held to a standard that represents their positions of power.
