Save medical students in IMSUTH from spending 11 years before graduating

The Issue

In Imo State University, medical students have had to spend up to 10years without failing a single exam before getting to graduate as medical doctors. Protests about this have been undertaken and the response was release of teargas to unarmed students in front of the government house.

The teaching hospital in Orlu, Imo State is in a deplorable state. It has been unattended to for soo many years. The staff have been owed for several months. Series of unsuccessful strikes by them have led to the total shut down of the hospital in several incidences. This has left hospital employees without pay, patients without care, and students without a teaching hospital. All these have added to the number of years spent.

On the academic level, there are barely permanent staff in the school. Adjunct lecturers that are available are as well being owed their due salaries.

The hospital and college of medicine have lacked vital structures and equipment which would not only better our chances of retaining accreditation, but would be beneficial for the education of the student body and use in care for the patients and community of Orlu.

Several attempts have been made to reach out to the governing body, but they have yielded little or no fruit so far.
