#StopCameroonViolations

The Issue

War has been raging in the English speaking regions of Cameroon since 2016. War in which, the country is torn by political and cultural conflicts.

Peaceful demonstrations are violently attacked by the Cameroonian army which resulted in arbitrary arrest, detention and killing of civilians.

In October 2017, the crisis erupted following the declaration of independence of a new state of ‘Ambazonia’.

Universal Human Rights and humanitarian values have been flagrantly disregarded. ,Civilians have become subjects of attacks, maimed and slaughtered in the streets, children conscripted into open militias, hospitals and schools attacked and burnt down, as well as the killing of school children.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in a full blown humanitarian crisis with over 711,056 internally displaced persons and about 60,000 as refugees in Nigeria. As the conflict intensifies, there has been growing evidence of the security forces perpetrating acts of extrajudicial killings, force disappearances, arson, torture, abitrary arrest and detention. Non state actors have equally committed several heinous acts such as hostage taking, killings and assaults. It is estimated that over 3,000 people have lost their lives in the course of the conflict.

The government of Cameroon has been complacent to attempts made by regional and international bodies to conduct investigations into the ongoing human rights concerns. The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights is still waiting on the Cameroon government to grant access for its human rights promotion visits. In November 2017, the UN Committee against Torture requested the government of Cameroon to let a UN Special procedures body pay a visit to Cameroon, till date, that has not happened.

The population in the English-regions continue to suffer from protracted armed violence, gross and systematic human rights violations, both from the government forces and the non-state armed groups. The Cameroon government is failing in its primary responsibility to protect civilians against mass atrocities. Very little has been done by the government to effectively bring an end to the voilations and find a lasting solution to the conflict.

This initiative  is a three-week campaign  to continue raising concerns about human rights violations in Cameroon, as well as a call to end violence and hostilities and find a peaceful solution to the conflict.
