Clare Island started this petition to Government of Ireland

Roonagh harbour, serving Clare Island and Inishturk islands off Co Mayo, is located on an exposed headland which allows heavy atlantic swells to reach it from south, south west, west, north west, and northerly points. At any time of year a large swell can arise and make Roonagh unsafe for landing. As a result of this ferries are disrupted for up to 20% of their scheduled sailings. In winter months it can be unusable for weeks at a time: so far in 2020 sailings to and from Clare Island have been disrupted 10 time! (as of Jan 10th)

The people of Clare Island and Inishturk cannot achieve a modern standard of living because of this simple but overwhelming issue. Tourism cannot be developed as ferries cannot be guaranteed. School age children have to leave home for the week and board on the mainland. Sick people have to rely on emergency helicopter evacuation. Basic commerce cannot reliably be conducted at banks, supermarkets, or livestock marts. Local authority and state services are frequently delayed for months at a time.

A new pier with a full breakwater is desperately needed for Roonagh. Protection from the prevailing winds and swells is needed and sufficient berthing space for both islands is needed. Improved parking and storage facilities are needed along with commercial space.
