The Issue
Puchi family, the famous Bangladeshi facebook page and youtube channel with million subscribers and followers run by a couple named Taposhi Das and Partha Das, has been detected with animal abuse and cruelty by lots of animal lovers and animal welfare activists from both Bangladesh and India. The video contents are made with cats for entertainment purposes and they are full of brutal disgusting activities that break the law of Animal Welfare act of Bangladesh, 2019. Not only are they doing it, but also they are normalizing it to millions of their viewers using these social platforms.
Neglect and abuse of their household cats that are shown on the live videos provoke a deep-seated sense of outrage among a large proportion of the animal lovers. Dragging and carrying their cats with tail and throat (that might cause dislocation of tail from backbone as well as the state of paralyze), giving them baths with laundry soap using cold water (extremely bad for cat's skin and fur), letting their cats drink other cat's urine and garbage (totally unhygienic) are some examples of everyday abuses done by them. They are teaching these abusive behaviors through their videos to millions of their followers who are mostly underaged and get influenced easily. Besides, though they use their cats to earn a lot of money, they don't ensure basic safety of their cat's health. They don't vaccinate or sterilize their cats, let their cats die in lack of treatments. Several cats have died from urine infection or flu or from giving them showers in cold weather with cold water. Moreover they blame rescued cats for these deaths and spread rumors among their fans like rescued cats are risky for other cats and they spread diseases which are utterly wrong. Through this they are sending wrong messages to millions of people and discouraging them to rescue and help stray cats and thus hampering animal welfare activists' hard work of years. They also breed and sell cats without license and not only that they let the mom cat and the son cat met which is wrong on so many levels. Kittens born from inbreeding have a higher risk of being physically disable or having a shorter life span than usual cats. They post cat mating videos on youtube without any parental guidance included only to have views so that they can earn from that.
Not only animals They humiliate other human beings in their videos, body shame them in the name of fun. All of her activities may destroy a lot of ethical sense among her viewers of how to treat both animals and humans. She is using these social platforms to earn money only by giving people wrong messages and normalizing animal cruelties and abuses.
In case of animals usually we only focus on physical neglect and abuse, while ignoring the psychological aspects of an animal. Some experts believe that emotional abuse and neglect elicit less anger on the part of the public because emotional maltreatment is harder to recognize, as it does not leave visible scars or overtly recognizable injury like that found in physical neglect and abuse. We do acknowledge this and we are addressing the emotional neglect, abuse, and suffering that is happening here. The way they taunt their cats, it causes fear and depression among them.
In many cases, animals choose to endure the physical discomfort in order to relieve the emotional pain and no doubt that their activities have been defined as actions or inactions that are neglectful, abusive, or otherwise threatening to an animal's welfare. They are neglectful to their cat's vaccines, treatments, healthy games, and instigate them to fight with each other and let them eat craps. The couple is conscious of the fact that the result will inflict harm.
The cats in videos are seen with underlying emotional distress, such as anxiety, fear, boredom, frustration, and social deprivation. They simply terrorize the cats and laugh on this. They control the cats with domination, intimidation, and rule by fear. Please note that their physical and/or emotional discomfort, distress, or suffering can be seen in the form of fear, anxiety, loneliness, helplessness, depression, frustration, boredom, grief, physical pain, ambient temperature extremes, severe pruritus, nausea, respiratory distress, etc. The other type of immediate harm is the harmful effects of emotions and “stress” on the physical health and processes of the body. Research spanning the last 100 years has clearly demonstrated the harmful effects of negative emotional states on all known bodily systems.
In adult humans and animals severe psychological trauma may cause manifestations of severe mental disorders and maladaptive behavior that can endure for a lifetime. Signs of posttraumatic stress disorder— PTSD— have been recognized in animals. And we don't want these cats to be used like this for earning purpose while lacking the main intention of having a cat that is to love them, keep them safe, ensure their treatment and care for them. Also we do not want them to spread these wrong messages and normalize ill treatment of cats among mass people through their video contents using YouTube and Facebook pages.
