Global War on Terror (GWOT) Federal Holiday

Global War on Terror (GWOT) Federal Holiday
The Issue
May 8th, 1945, marked the end of armed conflict in Europe as Germany signed an unconditional surrender, a moment commemorated as Victory in Europe Day, or VE Day. In the wake of this historic moment, Americans poured into the streets, celebrating the conclusion of a devastating war. For veterans who fought bravely in Europe, it was a poignant symbol of closure, signifying that they upheld their commitment to defend America against its adversaries. Fast forward to August 20th, 2021, the date marking the conclusion of the Global War on Terror; it is disheartening to note that our veterans received no similar recognition or closure. Instead of gratitude and celebration, they faced criticism, confusion, and profound sadness. These men and women made unparalleled sacrifices to ensure our freedom and protect our homeland from terrorism. Yet, the chaotic exit from Afghanistan on August 30th left many feeling as though their sacrifices were in vain.
Now, it is imperative that we finally honor the GWOT veterans and their families, providing them with the recognition they deserve. Let's establish September 11th as a National Holiday, a dedicated time to acknowledge the countless sacrifices made during the Global War on Terror. By doing so, we commit to remembering these heroes each year, allowing us all to reflect and find closure as we move forward from this significant chapter in our history.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
