Give Federal Workers Christmas Eve Off

Give Federal Workers Christmas Eve Off
The Issue
Federal workers have served through a long, difficult year — and this holiday season, they deserve a small but meaningful gesture of appreciation.
Christmas falls on a Thursday this year. That means unless President Trump acts, hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be expected to report to work on Christmas Eve — a day that, while not an official federal holiday, has traditionally been treated with flexibility and goodwill.
Past presidents have made this call before. In 2019 and 2020, President Trump gave feds Christmas Eve off, even when the calendar didn’t technically call for it. President Biden continued the tradition. And in 2014, when Christmas fell on a Thursday — just like this year — President Obama gave federal workers December 26 off to extend the holiday weekend.
It’s a small decision that goes a long way.
These workers support the day-to-day functions of our country — from processing Social Security claims to protecting our borders, maintaining national parks, and ensuring federal aid gets where it’s needed. Many have been working through backlogs, understaffing, and heightened political pressure for months.
A simple, full day off on Christmas Eve would honor their service and give them the time they need to travel, rest, and spend the holidays with their loved ones.
We urge President Trump to declare Wednesday, December 24, 2025, a full day off for all federal employees.
It's a gesture of goodwill, continuity, and gratitude — and it's the right thing to do.
