John LaFond started this petition to Governor Gina M. Raimondo

Governor Gina Raimondo just announced that due to Covid, High School and Youth Football seasons would be cancelled with a small possibility these sports could be pushed to the spring. However as football players, parents, and coaches know, there is no chance of moving the season to the spring when typically off season practices and fitness camps take place.

Many high school students have been playing football since a very early age, it is very disappointing that high school seniors will not be able to participate it what is very likely their last chance to ever play the sport they love ever again. Most high school players generally do not move on to college football teams, and as we all know there are not many adult recreation leagues due to the physical nature of the sport. These senior students could potentially miss out on additional stats, recruitment opportunities, and chances to showcase their talents to colleges in hopes of continuing to play or earning scholarships.

I feel there are several safe ways to avoid potential health concerns due to Covid. The first being each student athlete and parent should have to sign an honor contract to play on their team and in games, the contract outlines that students should avoid interactions that could potentially expose them to Covid (parties, hang outs, etc) any violations to the contract and the player will not be able to participate for the remainder of the season.

Additionally those students who will be participating in the games could be required to wear gloves, a full face covering (neoprene head covers, worn by football players that cover their mouths and nose), and plastic visors on their helmets. The point is while yes football is a contact sport, there are certainly ways to make it safe. Periodic wellness checks could also be performed by each teams medical professional, students could have temperatures checked multiple times a week during practices and it could be a requirement to even take the field at games.

Finally the decision to participate in football should be at the discretion of the players, parents, schools, and coaches, with each person fully understanding the ramifications of not abiding by the rules or contracts put in place. Not allowing a 2020/2021 High School football season is a disgrace. Governor Raimondo is taking away something from High School Seniors that can never be replaced.
