Broadway is always in need of new ideas for a hit show, and what better show to have on the stage than the Greatest Showman? The Greatest Showman is a movie musical (available on Disney+) set in 19th century New York City about famous ringleader/showman P.T. Barnum. After marrying childhood sweetheart Charity Hallett and raising two daughters, Helen and Caroline, he still wanted something more. When securing a bank loan and buying out an empty building, he opens Barnum’s American Museum, showcasing great wonders. However, ticket sales fail drastically and he is left wondering what he could do better to draw people in, so, P.T. Barnum hired a band of what most people considered “freaks” and showcased their unique attributes and talents. Business at this point was booming and ticket sales were through the roof, but like anything, there were a handful of good reviews, and also a lot of bad ones. In this case, the bad outweighed the good. People rioted and discriminated against the outcasts, causing the whole museum to be burnt down. At this point, no one knows what to do because the museum and the show was their whole livelihood, however it was also a lie. Barnum was only using them and their “weird” abilities to gain clout and interest, however, Barnum realizes what he’s done and resolves the conflict. By the end, Barnum’s entertainment building was restored, the outcasts decided to work with him again, business was booming once again, and everything is great from there on out and Barnum’s legacy continues on today! Now, wouldn’t that be PERFECT Broadway material? The songs are upbeat, fun, vocally intense, and Broadway-worthy. My mom has been hoping the Greatest Showman would come to Broadway for years and I really want to make that a reality for her, so signing this petition would really help, and hopefully producers will consider doing something with this really really great idea!
