Georgia Power: Stop Unjust Rate Hikes Now!

Georgia Power: Stop Unjust Rate Hikes Now!
The Issue
To: Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC), Georgia State Legislators, and Governor Brian Kemp
We, the hardworking people of Georgia, demand an immediate end to the skyrocketing electricity bills, hidden fees, and corporate greed that are crushing families across the state.
Electricity and heating are not luxuries - they are basic human necessities.
No family should have to choose between keeping the lights on or putting food on the table. No parent should have to decide between paying an electric bill or buying groceries for their children. No senior citizen on a fixed income should have to shiver through the winter because their bill is too high.
And yet, this is exactly what’s happening.
Why Are We Paying for Georgia Power’s Failures?
🔺 Georgia Power made the decision to expand Plant Vogtle, a nuclear project that was originally supposed to cost $14 billion. Today, it has exploded to over $34 billion—$20 billion over budget. Instead of the company taking responsibility for its massive failure, they are forcing families—who are already struggling—to pay for it.
🔺 Georgia Power has the highest electricity rates in the state. Customers are not just paying outrageous hidden fees—they are also being charged the highest price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in Georgia. That means even before the extra fees, we’re already overpaying for our electricity.
🔺 Our power bills are filled with extra charges we never agreed to.
✔️ Nuclear cost recovery fees – Why are we paying for Georgia Power’s bad investment?
✔️ Environmental compliance fees – Shouldn’t this be their responsibility as a power company?
✔️ Demand surcharges – Higher bills for using energy during normal hours?
✔️ Fuel cost adjustments – Even when fuel prices drop, our bills never go down.
🔺 Georgia Power is a monopoly. Unlike normal businesses that have to compete for customers, they have no competition. We have no choice but to pay whatever they decide to charge. Even when they fail, they make us pay.
While Georgia Families Struggle, Georgia Power Executives Are Thriving
💰 Georgia Power’s CEO, Christopher Womack, was paid $5.7 million in 2022. That means he makes more in one day than many Georgia families make in an entire month.
💰 Meanwhile, the average Georgia household makes just $66,000 a year. That’s less than Womack makes in just TWO WEEKS.
💰 If Georgia Power is in such financial trouble that they have to force struggling families to pay for their failures, why isn’t their CEO taking a pay cut? Why aren’t their executives giving up their bonuses?
We Demand Immediate Action:
🚨 A fair electricity rate—Georgia Power should not be allowed to charge the highest price per kWh in the state.
🚨 A full audit of Georgia Power’s billing practices—no more sneaky fees and unexplained charges.
🚨 An end to the Plant Vogtle cost recovery charges—we didn’t approve this project, so we shouldn’t be forced to pay for it.
🚨 Stronger consumer protection laws to stop utility companies from passing corporate failures onto the public.
🚨 Public hearings and full transparency—families deserve answers.
🚨 Demand Energy Choice! – Georgians should have the ability to choose their electricity provider, just like in other states. We should not be forced to buy from a monopoly that overcharges us.
We are NOT asking for a favor. We are demanding fairness.
Georgia Power and its executives made the choice to take a financial risk on Plant Vogtle, and they failed. We are not their safety net. We are families trying to survive. We are parents trying to feed our children. We are seniors living on fixed incomes. We are hardworking Georgians who deserve better.
