Sanitary product dispensers in school toilets

The Issue

This cause supports the installation of sanitary dispensers in schools, to make students feel protected and comfortable within their time in education. The products handed out would be free to students and refilled at a constant rate to ensure there are continually sufficient supplies. Ultimately this helps to aid the issue of period poverty, as the less fortunate wouldn't have to worry about running out of basic necessities. In the UK, 1 in 10 girls cannot afford menstrual products, with 1 in 7 struggling to afford them, the dispensers cannot completely resolve this nationwide issue but would be a step-forward in ensuring they do not suffer for the time they are at school.

Sanitary products are wrongly classed as a luxury product, with an unnecessary 5% added VAT tax classing them as a non-essential item. Furthermore, across the UK 137,000 children have sadly admitted they have missed school. Others blaming it on illness out of embarrassment. The dispensers allow a safe environment and dissolves harmful stigmas around menstruation as it is seen as a taboo topic.

Overall, with this implemented school experiences would be improved, boosting students confidence and security allowing them to speak freely about their concerns.
