Why this petition matters

Started by Yoelvis Gonzalez

St. Theresa the Little Flower Roman Catholic parish has been in the Vollintine-Evergreen historic district since before the district existed—over 90yrs. When the present church was built (over 70 years ago) it was built with an iconic Italian romanesque bell-tower. Speakers in the tower played the Angelus 3 times a day and calls to worship. Over the years, the speakers and original system fell into decline and the tower was silent for a few decades. Increased church attendance and the generosity of parishioners enabled the parish to restore and update the old carillon system back in December of 2021.

Although parishioners were overjoyed at the sound of the bells coming from their church’s imposing tower once again, and some of the neighbors expressed their joy and support for the sound of the bells, others have not. The parish listened respectfully to complaints and acquiesced by both reducing the volume of the speakers and the frequency of chiming. Nothing has placated disgruntled neighbors. The parish is committed to both its right to the freedom of religious expression and its duty to the proclamation of its faith. As some neighbors have positively expressed: “They [the bells] are a reminder of the presence of God in our neighborhood” and “The bells remind me of JESUS!”

Please sign our petition in support of our right of religious expression and evangelization and help is stop harassment from our neighbors.

May God bless you abundantly!
