The Issue

Help Overturn a Wrongful Conviction on November 12th, 2004, Elfred Sepeda was shot in an apartment near the Greeley, Colorado Mall.  Under deeply troubling and questionable circumstances, the Greeley Policy Department issued a warrant for the arrest of Norman Vasquez Jr. while Mr. Sepeda was recovering at North Colorado Medical Center from serious gunshot injuries.  Police officers repeatedly visited his hospital.  Despite Mr. Sepeda being heavily medicated and in severe pain, officers persistently showed him the same photograph, pressuring him to identify a suspect.  Though Mr. Sepeda asked the officers to leave him in peace, they remained until he finally identified the man in the photo- someone he did not know.  That man was Norman Vasquez Jr.   From the beginning, Mr. Vasquez has consistently maintained his innocence.  Unfortunately, his court-appointed attorney, distracted by other matters, failed to dedicate proper attention to this serious case. Independent reports from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) revealed DNA and fingerprint evidence on the firearm believed to be used in the shooting, crucially, none of that evidence matched Norman Vasquez Jr.  Despite this, he remained behind bars with no justice in sight.  On July 3rd 2024, Mr. Vasquez was granted a post-conviction relief hearing.  At this hearing, Mr. Sepeda; the victim himself testified under oath that Norman Vasquez Jr. did NOT shoot him, and that it was in fact another man.  Even with this powerful and clear testimony, the judge denied Mr. Vasquez's request for relief just three weeks later Today Mr. Vasquez is serving a 65 year sentence for a come he did not commit. This is not justice.  This is a tragedy. We are calling on compassionate individuals, community members, and advocates for justice to join us in correcting this wrongful conviction.  By signing this petition, you can help give Norman Vasquez Jr. and his family the chance to reunite and heal after two decades of unnecessary pain. Your support means the word to Mr. Vasquez and his loved ones. Please, add your voice to help right this wrong.
