Gilad Shalit is an Israeli soldier who was captured on 25 June 2006 by Hamas in a cross-border raid. He was abducted near the Kerem Shalom crossing (in Israel), and has been held as a prisoner in the Gaza Strip by Hamas since then.  He was born 28 Aug 1986.

UPDATE:  Gilad Shalit was freed in a prisoner exchange in October 2011. You can read about it here.  We will still use this petition as a sample because it shows how petitions can work to make change.
