Free Anchan Preelert before she turns 107!
The issue
Anchan is a Thai retiree... and is in jail until she turns 107 (i.e. a 43-year prison sentence) simply for sharing somebody else's podcast on social media.
Anchan was a hard-working civil servant at the time of her arrest, and unfortunately she is just one of many victims of Thailand's draconian laws on "lèse majesté", i.e. actions which may offend the monarchy. (The 250+ other prosecutions under this law have included children, human rights advocates & other elderly people).
Instead of enjoying her retirement Anchan was arrested without a warrant, lost her house, saw her husband flee the country for his safety, spent multiple years in jail, and has now been sentenced to spend the rest of her life in prison.
This is thought to be the longest known sentence handed down for lèse majesté in Thailand, and possibly the world. It's not in line with international law & the UN has already called for Thai authorities to release Anchan & grant her reparations. It's thought she was 'made an example of' due to her working as a civil servant at the time of her initial arrest.
Please join us in calling on Thailand's Prime Minister & Minister of Justice to release Anchan as soon as possible! This petition is active online & also offline (on paper/in person). Any petition submissions will also be copied to the relevant Ambassadors.
