Food industry: stand up! Help get dietary sodium and it's harmful effects down.
The Issue
67 million Americans are affected by hypertension while only 47 % of the time it's under control. High blood pressure is one of the major risk factors for heart disease, the no. 1 killer worldwide. It’s the leading risk factor of women’s deaths in the U.S., and the second leading risk factor for death in men. One-third of American adults have high blood pressure, and 90 % of American adults are expected to develop high blood pressure over their lifetimes. The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 1500-2000mg of sodium a day, yet Americans consume up to 3400 mg daily. 75 % of their sodium is from processed & restaurant foods. Lower sodium food options are crucial (and consumers deserve healthier options without higher prices). One American Heart Association -reported study suggested that if Americans moved to an average intake of 1,500 mg/day sodium, it could result in a 25.6 percent overall decrease in blood pressure and an estimated $26.2 billion in health care savings. We must join together and fight against the "silent killer"-hypertension by urging the food industry to provide lower sodium options. We implore our government to support this critical initiative. This fight is not just about us, it is also about our children. Nearly 80 percent of 1-3 year olds and more than 90 percent of 4-18 year-olds in the U.S. get too much sodium, and this can start increasing their risk of high blood pressure when they are as young as 1 year old, which may put them at higher risk for heart disease when they get older.
