Fix the VA prescription drug system-Help Vets from running out of meds, help save lives!

The Issue

Currently, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Health System requires Veterans to phone in all medications they need. These medications arrive via mail to the Vets home. There is no automatic refill system whatsoever. This is not just for "hard" drugs. It's for ALL drugs. You must remember to phone in all medications within about 12 days to receive your medications without running out. If you do run out, you can't just have your doctor phone in a script to the local Walgreens or CVS or whatever your usual pharmacy of choice is, doesn't work like that. You simply suffer the repercussions of forgetting to call them in until they arrive. So if you forgot to call until they ran out, you are stuck until they arrive 7-14 days later. If you are a Veteran suffering from chronic pain, depression, anxiety, PTSD, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, nightmares, migraines, insomnia....list goes on... that is a really big deal! Vets have a ton of issues to deal with already, remembering to make that phone call every month to phone in however many meds they have is just adding to that problem. For some Vets, it maybe not much more than an inconvenience. For others, it is a huge issue. I know I personally forget to refill my medications frequently and run out. That often makes my symptoms much worse than normal and it shouldn't have to be this way. Maybe you are thinking, why not just set an alarm, or do this, or do that? Well, life happens and you still forget. When you have a lot of the issues that many Vets do, it is very common to forget things. I often mean to call but my 3 year old distracts me, and I never remember after that, until my meds are out. I personally suffer from chronic pain, migraines, depression, allergies, insomnia and anxiety. When I am without those meds, my quality of life is deeply hindered. I personally have lost more friends than I can count from Veteran suicide. I am tired of losing them. I think if someone who is suicidal is off of their meds, the results are likely to be catastrophic. I am asking that this petition be signed because Vets deserve better than this. Every day, 22 Veterans commit suicide. Maybe if this petition makes a difference, one Veteran, somewhere, won't take their life. I am petitioning to have congress make a change to the current prescription system, to allow Vets the option to sign up for recurrent renewals so that their meds just show up when they are do if they have refills in the system, and also for them to recover notification on how many refills they have left. Also to make a change allowing a Vet who has completely run out of meds such as a depression/anxiety, heart meds, etc be filled by a local pharmacy in case by case basis, so we aren't losing Vets who ran out of refills and have to wait a week to recieved meds in the mail. Please sign this, share it, and tell people about it. Thanks. Cara Crump Veteran, SSgt, US Air Force
