I’d like to provide an update about the situation at Union Station.
On Sunday 5 January, the lifts at the Mont Albert Road end of the station failed yet again.
Experiences like one I had last February highlight the real impact of this ongoing issue.
On a hot day, I got off the train at Union with a friend and an elderly woman. We waited for the lift at the Mont Albert Road end of the station, but it never came.
When we contacted customer service, we were told to walk to the Surrey Hills end to use the lifts there.
While my friend and I could manage the walk, the elderly woman felt unable to walk to the Surrey Hills end and then back to the Mont Albert Road end of the station.
We walked with her to the Surrey Hills end, and my friend called her husband, who picked both her and the elderly woman up from there to drive them back to the Mont Albert Road end of the station.
For those who can’t walk the extra distance, these failures are more than inconvenient—they’re barriers to access. Public transport must be accessible for everyone, and reliable lifts at both ends of Union Station are crucial to achieving that.
Thank you for your ongoing support in advocating for accessibility at Union Station.
Together, we can continue to push for changes that ensure public transport is inclusive for all.
Best regards,
Susannah
