FIGHTING FOR ALICE BARKER!
103-year-old Alice Barker became a worldwide YouTube sensation very fast once her video began circulating the web in April of 2015. Alice Barker was a chorus line dancer during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1930s and 40s. She danced at clubs such as The Apollo, Cotton Club, The Zanzibar Club, and on Broadway—with legends including Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Although she danced in numerous movies, commercials and TV shows, she had never seen any of them, and all of her photographs and memorabilia had been lost over the years. Ms. Barker was so thrilled to see herself on video. Ms. Barker name was documented many times as Baker and not BaRker.
Since the video, Alice received so much recognition from around the world. A birthday letter and words of appreciation from President Barak & First Lady Michelle Obama warmed her heart and smile. Ms. Barker received the 2015 Jimmie Lunceford Legacy Award. In addition, her YouTube video was shared by famous artists such as Beyoncé Knowles. Recognition of Ms. Barker was on The Washington Post, Good Morning America, BuzzFeed and many more. Ms. Barker has received letters from all around the world of how her video inspired individuals to live and the will to continue to follow their dreams of dancing.
Alice Barker was raised during the time of segregation and she has a plethora of stories that she still remembers very well. The purpose of this petition is to allow Alice Barker's story to be told and written. In the letter President Barak sent to Alice Baker it stated, "Your story is an integral part of the American narrative, and you have witnessed the best of what our Nation can accomplish when we work together in pursuit of a brighter tomorrow." Ms. Barker been blessed to grace 103 years old and finally be recognize via web and it is important to be expeditious in gathering and collecting information before her demise. Many believe that she has lived thus far because she deserves honor and recognition.
Ms. Barker wants the world to know that she followed her dreams and lived her life to the fullest. She finally (after 80 plus years) felt that she was being recognized for her hard work, dedication and drive to be exactly what she aspired to be despite obstacles.
Ms. Barker was extremely excited when she recently received a letter from a young girl asking Ms. Baker to sign her autograph; Ms. Barker said this was the first autograph she ever signed. Ms. Baker is still well in her right mind and can recall many stories of her childhood through adulthood and this petition is to help her story be told and documented. Ms. Barker was asked if a book was ever written would she mind the proceeds going to a school of dance in her honor and Ms. Barker replied, "I would love that!"
We know that many people can take advantage of the elderly and that they have rights. This petition is not to exploit, take advantage of or hurt Ms. Alice Barker in any way. This is simply a petition to allow her story to be voiced. Therefore the goal of this petition is to allow interviews with Ms. Barker to get her story and write a book with proceeds going towards a school of Dance or Community Dance team.
Thank you so much for your time and petition consideration.
