Fight the Cost Increase for Student Parking at UTK

The Issue

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville's parking department has implemented a significant increase in parking fees, effectively making it unaffordable for many students. This rise in costs is unjust and adds to the financial strain on students already grappling with tuition, living expenses, and other financial obligations. Affordable parking is essential for students who commute to classes and work part-time jobs, and this new pricing system disproportionately impacts underclassmen who often have fewer financial resources.

The timing of this change is particularly problematic. It was announced only a few months before the start of the new academic year, after financial aid packages and admission offers had been accepted. Additionally, this decision was made just as the Graduate Student Senate (GSS) and the Undergraduate Senate were adjourning for the summer, leaving students without representation on this crucial issue. A sharp and abrupt fee increase is unfair and should have been introduced with more notice or through a gradual increase.

We call on the university administration to reconsider this decision and adopt a more equitable approach that does not unduly burden students financially. Please sign this petition if you support fair access to campus resources for all students!
