The Issue

America is the land of the free. Many families have to leave their homes for a better future in America: those families are struggling with poverty, war, hunger, and gang violence in their home country. These are families struggling with hunger, poverty, and hardship. They fled from unsafe conditions in search of hope on our land. However, they now face new challenges, the threat of detention and deportation from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an enforcement body, practices have come under significant backlash for discrepancies and misconduct nationwide.

It is important to recognize that immigrants are not criminals. The act of overstaying a visa is a civil and not a criminal offense. Yet, they are often treated as criminals, subjected to inhumane detention conditions, and separated from their families and loved ones, causing permanent harm to their lives and safety. The human rights of these individuals need to be protected, not ignored. We must address and correct the unjust practices that come from ICE's actions. For example Nicole and Alex Jeffrey Pretti these two American citizens have been slain in Minnesota by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the Twin Cities. Their deaths raise important questions—not just about the violation of First Amendment freedoms, but also the trampling of Eighth Amendment protections that bar the government from inflicting “cruel and unusual punishment.”

Every family deserves to feel safe, to live without fear of persecution, and to be treated with dignity and respect. It is our duty to hold ICE accountable for their actions, to ensure that they follow ethical practices that preserve human rights. There must be a transparent review process for ICE's operations to prevent abuse and ensure the fair treatment of undocumented immigrants.

Final solutions should include independent committees with the power to investigate ICE raids, as well as increased training for ICE officers on human rights and cultural sensitivities. Better legal support and ways for families to regularize their status can make a gigantic positive impact on their communities and the society at large.

We cannot stand by and let injustices continue. The fear faced by immigrant families seeking shelter and a chance at a better life should concern us all.

We urge lawmakers, the Department of Homeland Security, some specific local people are Michelle Wu, and Maura Healey, and all authorities to take immediate steps to address these issues. Your support can bring much needed change. Please sign this petition to stand with undocumented immigrant families and protect their civil liberties and human rights.
