Fight for Kleinburg Nashville Elementary School
The Issue
Hi! I am petitioning on behalf of the Kleinburg Nashville Community in the city of Vaughan for an elementary school.
We are in critical need of an elementary school that has been promised since 2014. Plans for the Kleinburg Nashville Elementary School have been submitted to the Ministry of Education by York Region District School Board and are pending approval by the Education Minister, Stephen Lecce. (See chart above)
Minister Lecce also happens to be our MPP so we are petitioning him to approve this school Immediately. We are also asking him to expedite this project, if possible, as the proposed opening is 2023 (IF approved in spring 2020). We have been waiting 6 years...we can not afford to wait this long.
Why do we need this school?
Kleinburg Public School is located a 5-10 minute drive away but they are unable to accommodate us due to rapid community growth and road infrastructure. We have been “temporarily” holding at a school located 10km away from our homes. This is also an early start school (8am bell time). The bus starts picking up children at 7:05am and children as young as 4 years old are enduring a 45 minute bus ride (each way). I have spoken to parents of children attending this school and they are suffering, children are suffering. Some parents have been forced to pay for private education. Others are even leaving the neighborhood because of the impact this has had on their lives.
We have a wonderful catholic school in our immediate neighborhood that serves the catholic families. But, this is affecting everyone outside of the catholic faith, and disproportionately affecting the POC in our community who practice a wide range of religions beliefs.
We need to ensure that every single person in our community contributing to education taxes has a school for their child to attend independent of their religious beliefs.
We are also asking for special accommodations while we wait for the school to be built in order to relieve the undue hardship this has caused. We are asking to have the start time of the holding school, Johnny Lombardi changed from 8am to 9am (or closer to). We would also like to have a direct bus there from our neighborhood to cut down on commute time.
