Feathers of Freedom against Bulbul bird fights in Assam

The Issue

Animal cruelty is a pressing issue that requires urgent attention and collective action. Animal cruelty takes forms such as physical and mental abuse, negligence, and abandonment. We are all part of a diverse ecosystem, and it breaks my heart to see us humans harm these innocent creatures that have not done anything to us.

The brutal Bulbul bird fight in Assam is a tradition that has been going on for over a decade and after a nine-year ban, the bird fight has made a comeback. This cruel practice involves capturing Bulbul birds, injecting performance enhancing drugs in their bodies and starving them a day before the fight so that the birds get aggressive to fight. The Bulbul fight not only inflicts immense physical pain in the birds, but it also gives rise to a culture of violence which is unethical in the society we live in. It's about time that we bring an end to such practices that go against the principles of love and compassion for animals.

There are several laws that are in place to prevent animal cruelty, however, these laws are not enforced strictly. The prevention of cruelty to animals act needs to be implemented strictly, and those found guilty of committing acts of animal cruelty need to be punished strictly. Moreover, there is an urgent need to increase public awareness by educating the public regarding the importance of acting with love and responsibility towards animals. When individuals are punished for their acts of animal cruelty, there will be a greater understanding of the importance of respecting animals and making the world free of animal cruelty.

Animal cruelty requires a multi-faceted approach. There should be stricter penalties in place for people who indulge in animal cruelty. There should be training programs for animal cruelty organizations and animal rights activists to understand how to approach different cases of animal cruelty and to ensure the activists have the necessary tools and knowledge to strictly enforce laws against animal cruelty. NGOs such as the CUPA large animal rescue and rehabilitation center could work towards building a society that actively fights for the cause of animal cruelty and actively reports instances of animal cruelty. By taking such a multi-faceted approach, animals could live in a peaceful society that’s free of cruelty.

Lets take collective action together on this issue and reduce the cruelty/distress that the voiceless creatures in our society face.
