Change legal age for children to use social media to 18 years from 13

The Issue

In light of the the revelations around Instagram and Facebook which just confirms what parents, educators and caregivers have observed over the last decade - I respectfully request that consideration be given to increasing legal age to engage in social media.

Messaging (SMS) and even chat in groups less than 50 could be exempted to allow communication with ‘in real life’ (IRL) friends and groups.

For national and transnational social sites the age restrictions could be enforced at a device level by IMEI and phone account registration and sale of smartphone ‘burners’ by Android and iOS.
