Exposing the Truth--PRMS Mismanagement and Justice for Band Teacher Kelly Parker at PRMS
The Issue
Pine Ridge MS, marking its 50th year since its opening, has enjoyed a stellar academic reputation with a most well-respected veteran faculty members who were regarded as top in their subject area. It was a neighborhood school, a continuation of the healthy, familial culture of involved citizens who took care of one another in a "small town" environment. The majority of those teachers who opened the school remained for years (decades) as veteran teachers on the faculty. PRM's stellar reputation was without equivocation, known for its very low staff turnover, the highest scholastic achievement, innovative student engagement, top-notch arts/music program, nearly non-existent disciplinary action. It served as a comprehensive model for the planning of new CCPS middle schools thereafter, up through the 2020 Covid-19 epidemic.
But the once enviable, most desired academic culture of 46 years has undergone a disturbing transformation over the past four years since the appointment of Principal Michelle Gordon. She has consistently failed to support members of her staff, created a culture of fear and submission, lack of transparency, neglect of academic pursuit and disregard for what is best for students and teachers. The result has been a school climate in which educators are undervalued, students are underserved, and staff morale has deteriorated to the lowest levels. One result of this poor administrative leadership under Mrs. Gordon is a reduced student population dropped by approximately 25% (1000 to 730 total students): PRM parents have transferred their children to private schools or to a different CCPS middle or charter school. Additionally, more than half of the total PRM faculty has left by transfer, resignation or retirement since her tenure began, most of them long-time school veteran teachers who could not continue teaching in the hostile environment that is borne of poor leadership decisions and lack of support.
Now, this broken system has led to one of the most damaging decisions yet: the unjust, forced resignation of Mrs. Kelly Parker from PRM/CCPS. Mrs. Parker’s impact spans far beyond the classroom. A music educator with 40 years of experience-starting her career in Central Florida in 1985 and continuing in Naples since 1988-she has shaped the lives of thousands of students as the band and choral director at Barron Collier High School and Pine Ridge Middle School. She has led student musicians to the highest honors, careers in major orchestras, professorships at colleges and universities, educators, attorneys, physicians, developers-all music appreciators who support the Arts and music in their own communities. Mrs. Parker has taught thousands of CCPS students over her 40 years and has provided extraordinary opportunities to learn and perform in 12 international countries on four continents. She was responsible for the safety and security of all those who traveled as director of the Barron Collier HS Band, Chorus and Orchestra.
In recognition of her deep commitment to patriotic service and youth development, Mrs. Parker has received numerous honors, including the 2022 Veterans Civilian Service Award from the Collier County Government and Veterans Council, commendations from the Collier County Sheriff and the Mayor of Naples, the Daughters of the American Revolution Citizenship Award, and a rare civilian honor from the U.S. 8th Army "First in Space" (Korea) for “exceptional professionalism and service to the community instilling fundamental human values in all students.”
One of Mrs. Parker's proudest contributions has been her deep involvement with the Collier County Veterans. For 28 consecutive years, Mrs. Parker included the PRMS & BCHS Bands in the annual Veterans Day and Memorial Day Ceremonies, giving students the opportunity to perform with pride, purpose and patriotism in front of their community. This cherished tradition, respected by the veteran community and the public, is now gone because of the abrupt decision to remove Mrs. Parker from her position as PRM Band Director. The students will no longer perform. The community that expected and looked forward to their music will now be met with silence and disappointment.
Parents and students alike are now witnessing the fallout of this decision. Since Mrs. Parker’s removal, band and orchestra students have lost more than a month of classroom instruction, have missed multiple concerts and important auditions, and the top Symphonic Band and Concert Orchestra students have been denied their culminating final year-end performances and awards-milestones many had worked toward for years. The opportunities Mrs. Parker worked tirelessly to provide are being stripped away with no regard for student development or experience, or reward for their dedication and achievement.
This isn’t just about one teacher being mistreated. It’s about the damage done when a school system allows ego-driven leadership to override fairness, dignity, and student success. Mrs. Parker’s reputation built on decades of service, international performances, award-winning ensembles, and lifelong student impact is being diminished, her name besmirched, her integrity impugned by a decision that lacks transparency, professionalism, and basic human decency.
We believe Mrs. Parker deserves to conclude her extraordinary career with respect, not silence. We believe our children deserve access to the music education that has so enriched their lives and made them better humans and citizens. And we believe our community deserves better leadership than the lack of sound management at Pine Ridge Middle School over the last four years under Principal Gordon.
We, the undersigned, respectfully call upon the Collier County School District to:
-Immediately return Mrs. Kelly Parker to the classroom for the remainder of the 2024-2025 school year;
-Investigate the ongoing leadership failures at Pine Ridge Middle School by Principal Gordon;
-Restore a school culture that prioritizes student opportunity, teacher support, and educational integrity.
Let’s be clear: Mrs. Parker's absence is a loss we cannot afford for our students, our community, and the future of music education in Collier County.
Please sign this petition to demand justice and earned respect for Mrs. Parker and to stand up for fairness, respect, and the education our children deserve.
