Expanding the Community Vegetable Garden in Skyline Playground

Expanding the Community Vegetable Garden in Skyline Playground

The Issue

H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths started a vegetable and native plant garden in the Skyline Playground on Prospect Avenue in New Brighton, Staten Island, NY. They have been nurturing this garden. This green space has become an integral part of the lives of Staten Islanders. In 2023 they expanded the garden to create a traditional Lenape garden next to the pickleball courts in the playground. They are fortunate to have many wonderful volunteers working with us such as Troop 76, NYPD Explorers, several local school, other scout troops, and of course, the neighborhood. They now wish to expand the garden again to where the old horse shoe area is  in the playground on Harvard and Prospect Avenues, also known as "Harvard Yard."

Growing vegetables locally not only promotes healthy eating but also fosters community engagement. According to the American Community Gardening Association, participating in such initiatives can lead to increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, improved physical activity levels and better neighborhood relationships (American Community Gardening Association).

The vision is simple - transform another part of the park into a thriving vegetable garden and greenhouse, where everyone can participate. This initiative will not only provide fresh produce for our tables but also create an educational platform for children and adults alike about sustainable living.

We urge the parks department, elected and local officials to support this endeavor that aims at enhancing community health and unity through gardening. Please sign this petition to show your support for establishing a community vegetable garden in the "Harvard Yard" section of the park.
