Expand Texas Program That Unites Veterans and Shelter Dogs

Expand Texas Program That Unites Veterans and Shelter Dogs
The Issue
Incarcerated military veterans in Texas are getting a rare opportunity to heal and help others—by training shelter dogs who have nowhere else to go.
A new program called Enduring Service just launched at Travis County State Jail in Austin. Over the next 12 weeks, 12 rescue dogs from Austin Animal Services will live one-on-one with veterans serving time. The veterans will feed them, train them, and help prepare them for adoption. In return, these men gain purpose, therapeutic connection, and job-ready skills they can carry with them after release.
This isn’t just feel-good news. It’s smart, compassionate policy. It eases overcrowding in local animal shelters, improves dogs' chances of finding permanent homes, and gives veterans a second chance to serve—this time with patience, love, and responsibility.
Programs like this have already succeeded in other states and at other Texas facilities, such as Bartlett State Jail. The benefits are real and lasting, both for the animals and the humans involved.
That’s why we are calling on the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and state lawmakers to expand Enduring Service to other jails and prisons across the state. More dogs need homes. More incarcerated veterans are looking for a way to give back, reconnect, and rebuild their lives. This is a chance to make that happen on a larger scale.
Texas has the resources. Now it needs the will.
Please sign and share this petition to support programs that heal hearts on both ends of the leash. Together, we can create more chances for transformation—for people and for pets.
