The Issue
Chiropractors in British Columbia are trained to do so much more than they’re currently allowed to practice. After completing a rigorous 4-year Doctor of Chiropractic program, they’re equipped to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions—yet outdated regulations under the Health Professions Act restrict their scope, leaving patients like me without access to holistic, non-invasive care. This needs to change.

What Chiropractors Can Do
With their expertise, chiropractors can address:
Tinnitus and ear disorders: Studies, like a 2010 case report, show spinal adjustments can relieve ringing in the ears tied to cervical issues—sometimes in just weeks.
Vertigo and headaches: When linked to spinal misalignment, these can improve with chiropractic care.
Chronic pain: Conditions like fibromyalgia or joint issues benefit from their biomechanical approach.
Prevention: Proactive spinal care can stop small problems from becoming chronic ones.

But right now, BC’s rules limit chiropractors from fully offering these treatments or even telling patients about them. This forces us to rely on medications that mask symptoms or invasive procedures that carry risks, rather than addressing root causes.

What We’re Losing
These restrictions mean:
Fewer Choices: Patients miss out on safe, drug-free options.
Unresolved Conditions: Issues like tinnitus or chronic pain linger when conventional medicine only manages, not cures.
Missed Collaboration: Chiropractors can’t fully partner with other healthcare providers, delaying care.
Take my story: I want the chance to try chiropractic care for conditions beyond back pain—conditions I know they’re trained to handle. But the system says no.

The Solution
We, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia to:
Expand the scope of practice: Update the Chiropractors Regulation to include conditions like tinnitus, vertigo, and chronic pain syndromes when tied to neuromusculoskeletal factors—matching chiropractors’ training.
Allow open communication: Let chiropractors inform patients of all evidence-based treatments they can provide, with clear disclaimers about success rates.
Enhance healthcare integration: Ensure chiropractors can order diagnostics and refer to specialists without barriers.
Prioritize patient autonomy: Give us the right to choose these treatments with informed consent, even if outcomes aren’t 100% guaranteed.
Why It Matters
This isn’t just about chiropractors—it’s about us, the patients. Expanding their scope means more options, better outcomes, and a healthcare system that truly puts people first. Imagine a province where tinnitus sufferers, chronic pain patients, and others can access care tailored to their needs, not limited by red tape.
