The 2024 Flagstaff Pride festival was a disappointment for many. FLOTUS made an appearance, and performers and attendees were oppressed and dismissed in favor of her speech. Some of the issues that were exasperated because of this decision:

-Accessibility to the festival was extremely limited
-Heavy policing and security eliminated the safe space feeling that Pride should have
-Attendees and performers were removed from the grounds
-Performers were lied to and forced to shorten, or eliminate completely, their appearance on stage
-Attendees experiences were overshadowed

And much, much more.

The Flagstaff Pride Board is here for the people. Yet, the 2024 festival was NOT aligned with that value. Despite numerous concerns from the community, and several requests from the FRN group to have a Townhall since Pride, Flagstaff Pride has not taken accountability for the harm they have caused, or sought to make amends. 

Flagstaff, AZ, is home to a large 2SLGBTQ+ community which makes up an estimated 4.5% of the total population, according to a study by Gallup. Despite these numbers, the representation of this diverse community in Flagstaff Pride events is not as inclusive as it should be. There is a crucial need to ensure that Pride is a reflection of our whole community, not just a selective part of it, to ensure more inclusivity and diversity.

In light of this, we continue to call for a change – to reform Flagstaff Pride Board into a group that truly reflects our community. We believe that every member of our beautiful diverse community should have a platform and voice to be seen and heard.

As preparation for the 2025 Pride festival begins, and under the current administration, our community needs to be advocated for more than ever.
