Establish official "Little Ecuador" in Queens, New York
The Issue
Queens, New York, stands as one of the most diverse urban areas in the world, and within this vibrant borough lies a community that has become the heart and soul of Ecuadorian culture in New York City. Stretching from the 90th Street-Elmhurst Ave subway station to the 103rd Street-Corona Plaza station, this area pulsates with Ecuadorian traditions, cuisine, music, and warmth.
Our dream is to have this enclave officially recognized as "Little Ecuador," not only to honor the rich tapestry of Ecuadorian culture that thrives here, but also to celebrate the contributions of Ecuadorians to the social and economic fabric of Queens.
The proposed perimeter:
From the 90th Street-Elmhurst Ave subway station to the 103rd Street-Corona Plaza station.
East-to-West Length: From 90th Street to 104th Street is 14 blocks long along the south side of Roosevelt Avenue and 45th Avenue.
North-to-South Width: From Roosevelt Avenue down to 45th Avenue (comprising the residential and commercial cross-streets of 41st Ave, 42nd Ave, and 43rd Ave)
An official designation would bring numerous benefits. It would boost local tourism, allowing visitors and residents alike to fully immerse in the cultural experiences akin to a step into Quito or Guayaquil. Local businesses would flourish, drawing in a myriad of visitors eager to experience authentic Ecuadorian fare and vibrant artisan crafts. This would not only strengthen the local economy but also provide job opportunities and foster community pride.
Moreover, we envision erecting a monument that stands as a beacon of Ecuadorian heritage in the heart of Queens—a symbol of unity, diversity, and the enduring spirit of our community. Similar initiatives have been successful in other cultural enclaves across the city, such as Little Italy and Chinatown, highlighting their significance in promoting multicultural understanding and appreciation.
However, we need the support of the city's administration to make "Little Ecuador" an official reality. We kindly urge Mayor Zohran and local government officials to collaborate with us in this cultural endeavor. Together, we can preserve and celebrate the vibrant Ecuadorian culture that enriches Queens.
Please sign this petition to support the official designation of "Little Ecuador" in Queens. Stand with us as we strive to make a piece of Ecuador thrive in New York City, enriching its diversity and cultural landscape. Your signature can help turn this vision into a celebrated community landmark.
