Establish More Cinemas for International Films in the Maldives

Establish More Cinemas for International Films in the Maldives
The Issue
A year ago, I waited in anticipation for the release of "Spiderman: Across The Spiderverse", only to discover that it wouldn't play in the only cinema in the Maldives that showcases international films. My excitement transformed into disappointment once again this year on June 26th, when "Deadpool and Wolverine" also didn't make it to our singular international cinema screen.
This isn't just about me, this is about us, the people of Maldives. Our nation is a collective of movie enthusiasts who should not have to settle for limited cinematic experiences. A single cinema isn't sufficient for a population of about 530,953 people, as per the World Bank data from 2020.
The limitation in viewing platforms for international films has restricted our exposure to global cinema. Our narrow cinematic landscape isn't reflective of our diverse interests and hunger for global stories.
Establishing more cinemas that play international films in the Maldives is more than just expanding entertainment options, it represents a step towards broadening our global cultural perspective, strengthening connections with the rest of the world, and catering to a diverse body of film enthusiasts in the country.
Let's work towards a future where no Maldivian has to say, "I looked forward to that movie, but it didn't show in our cinema." Let's make watching international movies an accessible joy, not a privilege for the people of the Maldives. We need to call on our local authorities and decision-makers to acknowledge this concern and take active measures.
Sign this petition, stand with us and let's bring about a change in our cinematic experience in the Maldives.
