The Issue

As a survivor of domestic violence and sexual assault, I know firsthand the pervasive fear and uncertainty one lives with after encountering such traumatic experiences. It is time to take meaningful action and provide additional layers of security and awareness for those affected by domestic violence. Just as the state of Tennessee has established Savannah’s Law, which mandates a registry for domestic violence offenders, I urge the implementation of a national registry to ensure that survivors across the country have the critical information needed to protect themselves and make informed decisions.

An offender registry, akin to that used for sexual offenders, would serve as a vital tool for victims, their families, and the public, by alerting communities of individuals who have been convicted of domestic violence crimes. This visibility not only aids in the protection of those at risk but also acts as a deterrent against potential future offenses. It is unmistakably necessary for providing peace of mind to survivors, allowing them to rebuild their lives without the constant fear of encountering their abusers again unawares.

Statistics indicate that nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States, equating to more than 10 million women and men annually, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV). The sobering facts demand action, yet current measures fall short in safeguarding victims completely. A national registry would close the gaps in protection often faced by survivors who move between states seeking safety and new beginnings.

Additionally, it provides potential employers, landlords, and community organizations with the information necessary to make informed choices regarding the individuals they choose to integrate into their environments. Such knowledge can prevent further victimization and support safer communities overall.

By implementing a nationwide registry for domestic violence offenders, we can take a definitive step towards giving power and safety back to the survivors and all affected parties, allowing them to live free from the shadows of their past traumas. Please join me in advocating for this essential legal reform. Together, we can push for a safer society for everyone. Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to prioritize the creation of a national domestic violence offender registry.  Thank you!
