Establish a London-Wide Free Workplace Parking Scheme for NHS and Emergency Service Person

Establish a London-Wide Free Workplace Parking Scheme for NHS and Emergency Service Person
The Issue
Navigating the bustling streets of London is a formidable task on its own, but for London’s NHS and emergency service personnel, including Ambulance, Police, and Fire Service staff, this challenge is even greater due to the lack of available parking at their workplaces. In a city where parking is both scarce and expensive, many of these dedicated professionals find themselves battling additional stress, all because they must secure a parking spot before they can even start saving lives.
I have personally witnessed the undue hardship faced by these workers, who are the backbone of our communities. They work long hours, often beyond regular shifts, with cancelled days off, night shifts, unsociable hours, and the need to travel quickly between locations while carrying specialist equipment. All of this is compounded by the uncertainty of where to safely park their vehicles and the struggle to comply with a system that is not designed to meet their needs.
The pressure of off-peak work hours compounds the situation, as public transportation is not always a viable option for those who need to be on call at a moment's notice. Despite this, many are required to pay significant parking charges at or near their workplaces. In a city where parking is limited and costly, this creates unnecessary financial strain and added stress for those already working in high-pressure roles.
A survey of more than 3,500 NHS staff found that around 63% have to pay for parking permits, and just 8% have a guaranteed parking space at work. In the same survey, more than half (54%) reported parking issues causing them to be late, and many spend time searching for a space or pay for alternative parking.
We call upon the Mayor of London and the Greater London Authority to take leadership in establishing a London-wide workplace parking scheme for NHS and emergency service personnel. This should include a dedicated permit system, ensuring free or significantly subsidised parking at or near workplaces, coordinated across boroughs to prevent postcode disparities.
Our emergency personnel run toward danger when others step back. It is only right that London stands behind them by implementing a city-wide parking framework that supports these vital frontline workers.
