Establish a Light Pollution Free Zone in Idaho Falls Metropolitan Area

Establish a Light Pollution Free Zone in Idaho Falls Metropolitan Area

The Issue

I am an ordinary citizen, who like many others, cherishes the simple pleasure of stargazing. However, this has become increasingly difficult due to the growing light pollution in our area. I have had to drive many hours just to find a spot where the stars are visible. This is why I am calling for the establishment of a light pollution free zone within the Idaho Falls metropolitan area.

Light pollution not only robs us of our starry skies but also disrupts ecosystems and has adverse health effects on humans and wildlife alike. According to a study published in Science Advances, more than 80% of the world's population lives under skyglow - artificial brightness of the night sky caused by urban lighting (Falchi et al., 2016). In fact, it is estimated that around 99% of people in Europe and America experience light-polluted night skies. According to National Geographic "Light pollution, or artificial light at night, is the excessive or poor use of artificial outdoor light, and it disrupts the natural patterns of wildlife, contributes to the increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, disrupts human sleep, and obscures the stars in the night sky," (NatGeoSociety). These are only a few of the downsides of light pollution which is why we need to create a light pollution free zone!

For those living in Rigby, ID and surrounding areas who share my love for astronomy or simply enjoy seeing natural beauty at night without having to travel long distances - this petition is for you too. Let's urge our local authorities to take action against excessive artificial lighting and create designated dark-sky spaces where we can all enjoy unobstructed views of celestial bodies.

By signing this petition, you are supporting an initiative that will not only restore our ability to appreciate nature's wonders but also contribute towards healthier environments for us and future generations. Please sign this petition today!
