In January 2021, the famous East Los Angeles landmark tree known as “El Pino”, will be cut down by a company that has purchased the property located on the corner of Indiana St. & Folsom St. where the tree is planted.

For some people, it’s just a tree...but for the people of L.A. and all of us that love the movie “Blood in Blood Out” a.k.a. “Bound by Honor”, it represents the pride of the Chicano culture in America. It’s a culture that many can relate to as we’ve seen people from all over the world as far as China and Australia come to visit “El Pino”. In the movie, the tree is a landmark for the local street gang, the “Vatos Locos” and is at the heart of the neighborhood. Just a block away from Los 5 Puntos market and Evergreen Cemetery that are also notable locations from the popular film. These 3 spots being so close to each other makes this area a perfect destination for tourists and fans of the movie.

“El Pino” is a symbol of love and brotherhood that we shouldn’t erase from the city, especially in these hard times when we all need to come together like a family. And that’s exactly what this tree provides, the welcoming feeling of being home with family.

A quote from the movie by the main character, Miklo, says it best: “That tree IS East Los to ME. It’s good to be home”. So please sign this petition and let’s SAVE “El Pino” !!!
