Anna J started this petition to EPA (Environmental Protection Authority) and

It’s been almost 3 years since the Barro Landfill hotspots were reported to EPA and yet they are still not fully extinguished. Our families have been unable to live their lives comfortably and in good health. For much of it, we have been stuck at home, isolating in our polluted homes due to the COVID 19 restrictions. For those within a 2km radius of the landfill, spending time outside, walking down the street or being able to hang out clean washing have been basic human needs that were not possible due to the agonisingly slow extinguishment of the fires. Despite this, the Barro Group have yet again applied for another extension to the deadline by which fires should be fully abated (originally June 2021) to February 2023.

We are frustrated that the handling and advocacy regarding this issue has been unrepresentative of the local community and tokenistic at best. There has been no consultation with the community about the actions that the Minister for Environment (Lily D’Ambriosio MP) or our local minister (Natalie Suleyman MP) are undertaking to fight for our community and our way of life. We are still no closer to any answer as to whether this landfill operator will be sanctioned or simply be allowed to continue operating the landfill once the fires have been extinguished. We point out that this issue is occurring within a landfill which our community fiercely fought against from the outset. We were assured that the community would not be impacted by the operation of the landfill and yet less than 5 years into operation there were 4 hotspots burning.

Since the fires have commenced, we have spent countless hours on the phone and internet reporting to the EPA the pollution we are enduring. This exercise has been emotionally and mentally exhausting, especially since EPA have responded very slowly, despite the overwhelming community outcry. The EPA were missing in action for much of 2021-2022, electing not to attend the regular community forums held by the Barro Group. The communication from the EPA to the public has been limited, sporadic and seemingly initiated following media reports on this issue.

Now we say enough! We want the fires out and assurances that the landfill will not be permitted to build new cells.
We cannot continue to live in this manner, and we need louder, consistent, and sustained advocacy to put this issue to an end, once and for all. We are tired of being neglected and want our elected representative to stand up for us.

Should this landfill continue to operate, there’s no guarantee that more fires will not occur in future. Barro have proven that they are incapable of dealing with hotspots quickly or effectively. A disaster like this, cannot be allowed to happen in this community again. We have voiced our concerns and have not been heard. We are exhausted, physically, and mentally. It is time for change.
