Lethal threat to wildlife in Nallamala forests. Uranium mining.
Lethal threat to wildlife in Nallamala forests. Uranium mining.
The Issue
Respected sir/ madam,
I am Prasanth, a medical student from India, would like to bring to your kind notice about a serious and a grave issue happening around us in the Nallamala forests spreading over in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in India. I would like to inform that the permissions have been granted to Department Of Atomic Energy for mining activities to be conducted in Nallamala forests in the search of Uranium reserves in the ground there. These activities if conducted, will have devastating effects on the diverse wildlife peacefully residing there in the forests and the tribal who live in harmony with the wildlife.
The research or any activity in the same name, poses a serious threat to all the lives of living organisms present there. As I check in the news daily keenly for any updates on the issue it has been official that the permissions have been granted for the research to be conducted there. All the wilderness will be disturbed very badly and all the wildlife cannot live or migrate from there immediately and their future is uncertain. It is a pity that their lives will be under the mercy of all the machinery and the people who are concerned with these threatening activities. I would like to clearly mention that the research or the mining will be conducted in the near future at the costs of all the rare species of flora and fauna which are critically endangered and native to these magnificent forests.
The tigers especially are facing the problems of all kinds and are battling for their survival all over the globe. Tigers present in these forests are going to face a serious problem if this project proceeds further. The tiger conservation is a very sensitive issue and is in the news for a very long time now. This project will clearly be a major setback to the tigers living in the Amrabad tiger reserve especially. It is a well-known fact that the Nagarjuna Sagar-Srisailam tiger reserve is the largest tiger reserve in the country (India) in terms of area that it is spread over in. All these tigers will be homeless if this project moves on. The largest variety of the Royal Bengal tigers, is facing a threat due to this project.
The tribals who are living there are going to face a lot of problems due to this mining. The tribal groups exotic to this area like the Chenchus, etc are going to face lethal consequences of this project. They are living here for ages depending on the forests and the forest products that they obtain from them. They will be left with no other choice but to evacuate the area that will become unsuitable any further life.
The amount of pollution that these mining activities will generate as a byproduct is another major factor for our concern. All the groundwater reserves are going to get poisoned due to acid or alkali treatment given to the ground prior to the mining activity. This will lead to water related problems. The byproducts are going to get merged with the Krishna river flowing through the forests and this will lead to water pollution and going to affect the water flow immediately from the point of contact. The poisonous gases will combine in the air and going to pollute the purest air flowing in the pleasant Nallamala range. As a whole, this is going to make all the environment hostile there for any living creature currently breathing there either the plants or the animals or the humans.
All the details provided by me here are to the best of my knowledge. Errors might have crept in the data. The responsible citizens and the organisations have to wake up and create the awareness about this hazardous project to be taken up. All the wildlife conservation organisations have to step up and prevent a massacre of the exotic wildlife from happening, that is going to take place there in the near future. The government needs to take a call immediately in the favour of the wildlife there and in the best interests of the native tribal groups as well. It is hence our responsibility to voice against this and prevent this from becoming a reality in the coming days.
Let us raise our voices. "PROTECT THE WILDLIFE AND SAVE MOTHER NATURE."
Anticipating the best possible timely action from your side with maximum efforts.
Thanking you.
Yours truly
