Ensure traffic is halted in the Haymarket area for the entire Remembrance Day service.
The Issue
Every November, people from across the country gather at the Haymarket area of Edinburgh to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in wartime. For many, this solemn observance during the Remembrance Day service is a deeply personal and emotional occasion. It is a time of reflection, honour, and respect, which deserves a tranquil and undisturbed atmosphere.
Unfortunately, the continuous flow of traffic amidst the solemnity of the service creates an environment that is far from ideal. The council has demonstrated its capacity to halt traffic for various events, including fun runs, marathons, and even the visits of supercars to the city. Therefore, it is puzzling and dispiriting that such measures are not consistently applied to an event as significant as the Remembrance Day service. This year (2025) the council actually agreed to halt traffic for a short part of the service, and the calm, reflective atmosphere the lack of traffic created was stark contrast to the usual engine roars, tram bells and general traffic noise the service has to fight with. By halting the traffic for a short while, it only illustrated how frustrating it is when the traffic is not halted. Those in attendance, and those we are remembering, deserve better.
By halting traffic in the Haymarket area for the full duration of the Remembrance Day service, we ensure that the focus remains on the remembrance of our nation's heroes, unimpeded by the hustle and roar of city life. This action would provide a peaceful environment, allowing attendees to engage fully in the commemorative activities and fostering a deeper sense of community and reverence for those honoured.
Moreover, stopping traffic during the service is not just a matter of respect but a measure of safety. With large numbers of people congregating in the area, reduced traffic will minimise potential hazards, thus ensuring that the day proceeds smoothly and safely for all involved.
I urge The City of Edinburgh Council to demonstrate their commitment to upholding the dignity and solemnity of the Remembrance Day service by implementing a complete traffic halt in the Haymarket area each November. Let us honour those who gave their lives with the full attention and respect they deserve.
Please sign this petition to call on The City of Edinburgh Council to take immediate action in respecting and preserving the integrity of the Remembrance Day service by ensuring the roads in Haymarket are closed to traffic during this significant event.
