Ensure safety for Branxton Public School students
The issue
Our children’s safety should always be a top priority, but at Branxton Public School, it’s at risk every day. Our school, now with over 580 students, sees more than half of its pupils walking to and from school daily. Unfortunately, the infrastructure around the school is ill-equipped to handle this. There are no dedicated 'kiss and drop' zones for rushed parents. Parking is sparse, and this only worsens the already congested streets. This not only frustrates parents and residents alike but also puts our kids in danger as they navigate these busy roads.
Over the last 5 years, there have been multiple incidents where children have had near misses with passing cars and buses. Earlier this year, this reality hit home when a young child was struck by a vehicle. This cannot continue.
What Branxton Public School desperately needs are 3 dedicated school safety crossings on the streets surrounding the premises. Additionally, an update to the kerbs and guttering, along with a full concrete path around the school, is essential. These straightforward improvements can drastically increase safety for our students, remove traffic bottlenecks, and provide some peace of mind to the parents and residents.
Issuing parking fines by the local council ranger isn't the solution; investing in child safety is. We urge the Cessnock City Council to prioritise and act on these needs. This is about ensuring that not a single child’s life is at risk due to inadequate safety measures. Let's work together to make Branxton Public School's streets safer for all its students.
Please sign this petition to urge the Cessnock City Council to take immediate action to protect our children.
