Ensure human rights for Afghan women
The Issue
Women's rights are human rights, yet millions of women in Afghanistan are stripped of their basic freedoms every day. Being a woman in Afghanistan means living under a virtual apartheid, where gender determines access to education, employment, healthcare, and the ability to move freely. As someone who deeply values and believes in equality for every human being regardless of gender, I am heartbroken by the injustices faced by Afghan women.
Following the Taliban's resurgence in 2021, sweeping restrictions have been re-imposed on women and girls. Women are now banned from secondary schools, many female employees have been dismissed from their jobs, and strict dress codes are enforced. This return to oppressive policies has undone years of progress. According to UN statistics, prior to 2021, around 3.5 million girls were enrolled in primary and secondary schools in Afghanistan; now, their educational futures are uncertain.
These restrictions are not only violations of international human rights norms but also target women's dignity and fundamental freedoms. Education and employment are key to empowerment, and without these, Afghan women are deprived of the tools they need to claim their equality in society. According to Human Rights Watch, such systematic oppression affects not just women and girls, but families, communities and the country's development as a whole.
Yet we can make a difference. The international community must hold the Taliban accountable to their commitments under international law, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Pressure must be applied to ensure Afghan authorities respect women's rights, and financial and humanitarian aid must be contingent on measurable progress in this area.
