Ensure Female Breast Cancer Patients Receive Appropriate Post-Operative Care
Ensure Female Breast Cancer Patients Receive Appropriate Post-Operative Care
The issue
I am a survivor of breast cancer, and like many others, I underwent an invasive double mastectomy. However, my recovery was marred by an experience that no woman should ever have to endure. After my surgery, I woke up in a room full of men. One man in particular made me feel intimidated and humiliated every time nurses or visitors came into the room. This had a negative impact on my health and overall recovery.
This is not just about me; it's about all women who are battling breast cancer in QLD, Australia. It's about ensuring that we are provided with the care and respect we deserve during our most vulnerable moments.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Australia - 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed by their 85th birthday (source: Australian Institute of Health and Welfare). These women deserve to recover from their surgeries without feeling unsafe or uncomfortable.
We need to ensure that hospitals have appropriate policies in place for post-operative care for female patients - particularly those recovering from mastectomies. Women should not wake up from such an invasive procedure only to feel vulnerable due to their surroundings.
I urge you to sign this petition so we can make sure no woman has to go through what I did after surgery again. Let's band together as sisters, friends, mothers, daughters - as humans - and demand better for all women fighting against breast cancer.
