Ensure fair AI review for social media pole dancers
The Issue
For over a decade, my pole studio has been more than just a business—it's a community for countless individuals seeking empowerment, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Social media has played a vital role in this, allowing us not only to disseminate information but to weave our stories and foster connections among members. But recently, many in our community, including those who rely on pole dancing for their livelihoods, have faced inexplicable account suspensions and content removals without proper justification or avenues for appeal.
These issues seem to stem from an automated AI screening mechanism by Meta, which lacks the nuanced understanding required to interpret the artistic and non-explicit nature of pole dance content. A colleague of mine lost over 20 years' worth of invaluable content—an irreplaceable archive of personal and professional achievements—with no real chance to contest the decision. This not only disrupts businesses and careers but stifles the art form and the cultural narratives it represents.
We understand the necessity of content moderation, but there must be a balance. AI should be used to assist, not erroneously penalize. We request Meta to:
1. Implement human oversight for AI decisions regarding account bans and content takedowns in niche and misunderstood communities like ours.
2. Provide a transparent and accessible appeals process for affected users.
3. Regularly refine the AI algorithms to better discern between harmful content and creative expression.
By addressing these points, Meta can ensure fair treatment for pole dance communities, enabling us to continue thriving both online and offline. I urge everyone who values creative expression and fair digital practices to sign this petition and support our call for change.
