Ensure all kids learn to swim before leaving school

Ensure all kids learn to swim before leaving school
The Issue
In the wake of a tragic incident, the importance of teaching swimming skills to children has become painfully clear. Paul Pike, a vibrant 18-year-old, tragically drowned after accidentally falling into the River Derwent in Derby following a football match. His inability to swim cost him his life—a loss that could have been prevented with basic swimming education.
Swimming is not just a recreational activity; it's a crucial life skill. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death among children and young adults. Every year, hundreds lose their lives to water-related accidents, many of which occur because they weren't equipped with the necessary swimming skills or water safety knowledge.
Currently, there is no nationwide requirement for all students to learn swimming before they graduate from school. This gap leaves thousands of young people vulnerable to water-related incidents. In a country replete with rivers, lakes, and coastlines, it is vital that every child leave school knowing how to swim, just as they know how to read or do basic math.
We propose that the Department for Education integrate compulsory swimming lessons into the school curriculum for all primary and secondary students across the UK. Schools should partner with local swimming facilities, and qualified instructors should be hired to ensure high-quality training.
This initiative would require modest funding compared to the immense value of lives saved. Public swimming pools, community centers, and sports clubs can be pivotal partners in this mission.
Teaching children to swim is not just about safety—it's also about confidence. Swimming opens doors to a world of water sports, potential careers, and improved health and fitness.
We must act now to prevent any more senseless deaths. By signing this petition, you will be urging the Department for Education to mandate swimming lessons for all children before they leave school. Together, we can build a safer, more prepared generation and honor the memory of those we've lost, like Paul.
Please sign this petition to ensure no other family has to endure the heartbreak of losing a child to drowning.
