As a parent, I experienced an alarming incident at my child's school recently that left me shaken and deeply concerned. During pick-up time, a stranger managed to enter the school grounds, filmed the children, and left without being challenged or stopped. This breach in security highlighted a significant vulnerability in the safety measures currently in place—a vulnerability that could potentially put our most vulnerable at considerable risk.

Our children deserve a safe and secure environment for learning and development. However, the current state of lax safety protocols undermines this fundamental right. At many schools, existing security measures concerning open gates are insufficient. Strangers can access school premises too easily during times when gates are open, such as during drop-off and pick-up periods. The potential dangers this poses are unacceptable.

To address and mitigate this issue, it is imperative that we take immediate action to strengthen security measures at schools. I urge local educational authorities and school administration to consider implementing one or more of the following solutions to secure our schools effectively:

1. **Stationing Personnel at Gate Entrances:** Ensure that gates are manned during opening hours, particularly during high-traffic times like morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups. This will allow school staff to monitor incoming individuals and ensure only authorized persons can enter the school premises.

2. **Installation of a Buzz-in System:** Implement a buzz-in system at entrance points so that access is controlled and screened. This will prevent unauthorized entry and allow for better management of those entering school grounds.

3. **Enhanced Surveillance Measures:** Increase the number of security cameras around the perimeter and main entry points. Review footage regularly to swiftly address any security breaches.

4. **Regular Security Drills and Protocol Updates:** Conduct regular security assessments and drills to ensure staff and students are prepared for emergencies. Update safety protocols regularly to adapt to evolving security challenges.

Our children's safety must be our top priority. No parent should have to experience the fear I did when realizing the potential danger posed to their child at school.
