Enhance safety measures at Worcester courthouse atrium

The Issue

Losing someone to suicide is a heart-wrenching experience, a pain that leaves a void no words can fill. As advocates for suicide prevention and longstanding supporters of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, we’ve dedicated over a decade to fundraising and raising awareness for this critical cause. One place where urgent attention is needed is the Worcester courthouse atrium in Massachusetts.

The Worcester courthouse is a place where emotions often run high. Those going through challenging legal battles or judgments may face overwhelming stress, anxiety, or despair. Unfortunately, there have been suicide attempts in the atrium, signaling a dire need for enhanced safety measures. The current design, with its inadequate railings and open atrium, presents significant risks for vulnerable individuals.

To prevent any future tragedies and ensure the safety of everyone visiting the courthouse, we are calling for the installation of higher railings or the introduction of new construction measures within the atrium. Such improvements can create a more secure environment and ward off the chance of the courthouse becoming what is known as a “hotspot” for suicide attempts, providing peace of mind to both visitors and staff.

Implementing these changes not only demonstrates a commitment to public safety but also reflects a broader societal responsibility to protect those who are most vulnerable. Our proposed enhancements are not merely reactive; they are proactive solutions that anticipate risks and address them before they result in irreparable harm.

By updating the atrium's design, we can save lives—plain and simple. This isn't just about infrastructure; it's about compassion, foresight, and our shared duty to look out for each other.

Sign this petition to urge local authorities and decision-makers at the Worcester courthouse to take immediate, meaningful action. Together, we can make a difference and provide a safer environment for all. Please join us in advocating for change.
