The Issue

My name is Melanie Nolan and I have faced immense challenges due to dental problems. After most of my teeth were removed, I was only offered dentures as a solution. However, due to childhood issues with certain foods, wearing dentures makes me gag, leaving me in a constant state of discomfort and affecting my daily life profoundly.

They tigger an uncomfortable gag reflex and intense anxiety it effects my nutrition , physical health and mental wellbeing and ability to lead a normal life.

This struggle is not unique to me. Thousands of individuals across the country face similar challenges when it comes to dental care solutions that do not adequately address their personal needs. While dentures are a common solution, they are not suitable for everyone, especially those who have heightened gag reflexes or other sensitivities. Been able to eat safely, speak clearly and feel confident in public is not a luxury it is a basic human need.

Too many people are left to suffer in silence, malnourished , isolated and unwell because the system only offers one solution that does not work for everyone.

According to a study by the American College of Prosthodontists, around 36 million Americans do not have any teeth, and 90% of those wear dentures. However, there is a significant proportion of these individuals, like myself, who find traditional dentures unwearable. The lack of alternative options leaves us feeling trapped and can significantly impact our quality of life.

We are calling upon dental care providers, health insurance companies, and policymakers to recognize this gap and take urgent action. There should be greater availability and coverage for alternative dental solutions such as dental implants, permanent bridges, or other prosthetic options that cater to individuals who cannot tolerate dentures.

Increased funding and research into more personalized dental care solutions can improve the lives of those who struggle like I do. It is time for a more inclusive approach to dental health—a critical aspect of overall well-being.

Please sign this petition to urge the responsible parties to take action and ensure dental solutions that consider everyone’s unique needs are accessible and affordable for all who need them.
