The Issue

The relentless slaughter of horses, both domestic and wild, in the United States is a tragic and unnecessary act of cruelty that must be addressed with urgency. The SAFE (Safeguard American Food Exports) Act, which seeks to end the slaughter of American horses for human consumption, is a critical piece of legislation that needs robust enforcement, especially in areas like Tucson where the practice continues to jeopardize the welfare of these noble animals.

Horses have long been cherished as companions, workers, athletes, and symbols of freedom. Yet, hundreds of thousands are inhumanely killed annually, shipped to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada under terrifying conditions. The horse racing industry, over-breeding, and lack of responsible ownership contribute to a surplus of horses, leading many to be sold to 'kill buyers.' These horses endure appalling journeys to slaughter facilities where they face brutal and painful deaths.

The SAFE Act, if diligently enforced, would ban the sale and transport of horses for the purpose of slaughter for human consumption in the United States. Unfortunately, without local and national enforcement, loopholes and illegal activities persist. It is imperative that we tighten the enforcement of this Act in Tucson, cutting off local supply chains to foreign slaughterhouses and safeguarding our local equine populations.

Statistics from the Humane Society of the United States highlight that over 100,000 American horses are sent to slaughter each year. Many of these horses are in good health, capable of being rehomed or retrained. Advocates point out the deep emotional and social bonds horses form with humans, underscoring the ethical obligation to protect them from such an end.

Concrete solutions include the increased funding of rescues and sanctuaries that can take in abandoned or at-risk horses, thus reducing the number of animals funneled into the slaughter pipeline. Additionally, public awareness campaigns and strict punitive measures against those violating the SAFE Act can further diminish the slaughter rates.

Your voice can make a difference in enforcing the SAFE Act in Tucson and stopping the inhumane treatment of horses locally. Please sign this petition to urge local lawmakers and law enforcement agencies to prioritize the protection of our equine companions. Together, we can ensure a future free from equine slaughter in Tucson.
